Default 3.0 911SC motor in a 75 911S Sportomatic?

I'm a semi-paraplegic with a serious Porsche affliction and currently own a 2001 Turbo Tip that is lots-o-fun. I've been thinking about an air cooled 911 and have located a 1975 911S Targa Sportomatic that has the dreaded 2.7 L motor. I'm looking for opinions and /or advice if a 3.0 911 SC motor can bolt up to the Sportomatic and go in the 75 911.

Might make more sense to get a 964 or 993 as they came stock with autos.

couple points .
are you sure the 2.7 hasnt already been sorted ? if so it may not be the nightmare you are expecting.

i think a 3.0 is a direct bolt in any 3.6 would be major surgery and a ton of work

Yes, the 3.0l can easily be put in the car. Though given the current market, if you went that route you would want to keep the original numbers matching engine under a tarp in the corner of your garage. If you ever sell, you will regret getting rid of it.

Also, as mentioned, if it has been sorted with time certs and shuffle pins, etc and properly remanufactured, the 2.7 is a great little engine. The '75 is still a fairly light car and I've seen more than a few surprised smiles when that car gets up and gets out of it's own way more quickly than expected.

Kind of a late reply, but there were 3.0 cars delivered with Sportomatics including the 1976 - 1977 3.0 Carerra ($$$$ though). I have seen ads for 1978, possibly 1979 models with sportomatics. Few and far between though.

i have a friend with a Euro 3.0 Sportomatic which I wish I'd bought from him before air cooled cars went $tupid...his car is extra special too.

i too fantasize about replacing my '74 Sportomatic or doing a Sportomatic swap in to a SC. I still have most of my sporto bits as I kept them when I sold my '74....the body was toast.

If I found a SC coupe for the right price I'd still love to row my own but now with PDK cars almost within reach...I need to throw my hand controls on a newer car for a test ride and bust open the piggy bank!

I recall reading recently in Panorama, or maybe, Excellence, that the problem with Sportomatics is that you can't find parts and no one knows how to repair them. This might be more of a stumbling block than the 2.7 liter.

Thanks to all for the input over the last 2 1/2 years and I am happy to report that in November of '05 I found and purchased a '79 911SC 3.0 ROW with a Sportomatic in Petrol Blue, sunroof & factory AC with 104k miles. My car runs and handles exceptionally well, has lots-o-power and with the patience the Sporto deserves shifts cleanly both up and down. I'm very fortunate to know 2 retired Porsche dealership mechanics that have experience with the air cooled 911's and have experience with the Sportomatic transmissions. Now that I have a '79 911SC Sporto and '01 911 Turbo Tip do I now need a 4S PDK???? As I tell my wife of 34 years "Man cannot live by love alone". Happy Motoring!

Red calipers are a nice touch.

Default 1978 911SC Engine Compartment US Spec

Clints / OP:

Great looking 1979 911SC! Your Petrol Blue paint appears to be in execellent shape, has the car been repainted to your knowledge? Your SC's Fuchs wheel look to be in great shape too.

From the image of your 1979 Engine Compartment, you or a previous owner removed the air pump (formerly on the driver's side of the engine). You can get a OEM one-sheave pully wheel (inexpensive) to replace the two-sheave wheel that was needed when your car still had the air pump. Attached is an image of my SC's engine compartment with the one-sheave pully wheel.

When my SC had its SSI heat exchangers installed, the air pump and its hardware were removed, and 1975 sheet metal engine pan surround installed (no hole in the back engine sheet metal pan surround for the air pump plumbing to the underside of the engine). The decals in my SC's engine compartment are original and installed at the factory.

You label the car and its Sportomatic transmission as a ROW; normally a Euro or ROW 911SC has a small yellow running light on middle rear of the front fenders. Were those lights removed, and the small holes in the fenders filled?

From the image of the interior there are two silver or chrome "buttons" on either side of the dash on its face. Do these "buttons" have a function? Thanks in advance for your answers to another SC owner.

Best Regards --- Type 2
