Default 1984 911 - price check & repair question

Looking at a 1994 911 coupe that's had a partial restoration but its by no means perfect. Seats, for example, are from an '88 and most of the restoration is engine work than anything else.

It looks in decent condition as a daily driver with some minor paint issues but real concern is "2nd gear synchro is worn out". How much is this tranny fix and how much of an issue is it?

Plus, with 112k miles, what value would you put this vehicle - if condition was daily driver with paint issues? Listed at $23k but that seems high for the issues and limited restoration work.

The aircooled 911 market is more than a little nuts at the moment. $23.5K for a driver status 3.2 is pretty decent these days. Get a thorough PPI by an experienced shop. The 2nd gear synchro issue depends just how bad it is.

I looked at the ad for the car I believe you're considering. I'd use the PPI results to negotiate the price a bit but there's probably not that much to go down honestly. http://providence.craigslist.org/cto/4718196653.html

Tim,

You're right, you found the craigslist post I was referencing. Appreciate the follow up - a PPI is in order for sure. Any experience with a synchro or tranny issue on a 911? My only engine experiences are BMW's, Range Rover's and Saabs so far....

Wow, bragging about being a professional mechanic, and offering a kick-the-can car at a premium price. Sad we've come to this point.

The transmission thing isn't a big deal to "just fix." Which he should have done when he did the clutch. Comprehensively repairing the transaxle at 100K+ miles is a whole 'nother thing. (See Pete's book, and then there's the sticky up on top of the forum.)

ANY exposed corrosion, well how much to repair properly? Yeah, we're spoiled in CA, but it's a no-go for me. Always.

Then you've got the valve guide thing at this mileage.
