Opinions wanted on color
I have a 79 SC. It is a non-sunroof coupe. The car is currently red. The paint is tired, so I'm going to have it repainted. I just got the C0A from Porsche, and it turns out that the car was originally Copper Brown metalic.
My options are:
a) repaint car in current Guards Red (cheapest option)
b) restore back to original color (cost more, and may not be the most valuable color on a 911)
c) Paint car in a completely different direction, such as Gulf Blue (one of my favorites). However, it would have to go with the dark tan interior.
Resale value is a concern.
Here is a picture of how it would look with the factory original paint (found this picture on Pelican Parts):

I have a preference for the off-beat colors of the late 70s/early 80s cars. Every other 911 in the world is red. I'd take it back to original color, restore the value and enjoy the period-correct look.

love the copper, and as someone else said the "special" colors of that time are beautiful.
IMHO, guards red is a Corvette color and I never liked it on a Porsche.
Arena red is another story

I vote go back to the original color. Theiceman's car looks great. More interesting than Guards Red IMHO.
That first car looks like Quartz Gray Metallic to me. Same as my '83.

The copper color reminds me of the 993 metallic black. It has a McQueen feel while red to me feels like you're trying too hard to stand out

It is sin to color change according to the car collector bible.
if you are keeping the car original, then keep the color that matches the tag.
If you are hot rodding the car then originality is out the window and might as well go for a color change.
Since you are not back dating this car, you might as well bring it back to its original glory and best resale value in the orginal color.

It really depends on how good a job did the painter do when they changed the color originally to guards red. Original is best, we all agree on that but if you now have to pay to repaint all painted surfaces ie bare metal paintjob, you are going to be best served with a respray of the guards red imo.
In certain light, your original color is very similar to my Cassis Red coupe. Sorry about the ex in the picture.

I'd go with the original color as well.
It looks great, different from the crowd, and it always adds value. Color changes lose traction for me.
I was recently looking at a 912 that was painted a similar color to yours (metallic brown), and it looked beautiful. I lost interest when I found out that the original color had been Polo Red.....
But go with your guts, not with what we think!
