84 catalytic bypass question
Hey everyone,
I found a 1984 3.2 that I am interested in getting, but it has a catalytic bypass pipe on it. I live in CA so passing smog is a must. How easy is it to convert it back to stock and approximately what would it cost to do so? I am not very mechanical and have limited background in cars. Thanks.

Easy! (just not cheap).
You will need to buy a new converter, I would not spend money on any used one, and simply install it where the bypass pipe is. Make sure the O2 sensor still works correctly and if in doubt, replace it.
That's all you need.

Is it a 50 State car or a 49 State car? If it sold originally in CA then it is a 50 State car if not, it probably is a 49 State car. Much cheaper to buy a 49 State CAT than a 50 State (CA only) CAT. Install the 49 State CAT (if your car is a 49 State car) and it will easily (providing good tune) pass smog. Also, be sure to install the heat shield, which is probably not installed.
