Vehicle Identification Plate Delete
Decided to pull the trigger and order a Certificate from Porsche for my 84 911. Lines up perfectly to the car as equipped, down to the delete on the air pump ( which I assumed had been misplaced along the way), but I noted an "option code" 912 that was Vehicle Identification Plate delete. What does that mean and why would such an option even exist? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Anyone ? Vehicle without Identification Plate ( Option 912) must have been meant to accomplish something for the ordering dealer or individual. Odd. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I am thinking a badge delete myself, but it appears you have all your badges on the car. I can faintly see the Carrera on the rear deck and Targa on the roll bar. That doesn't mean that somebody didn't add the badging after the fact though.

I thought 498 was the rear model designation delete code?
Presumably you have a VIN plate visible through the windscreen ahead of the steering wheel? And one under the front lid?

I'll have to look. I understand there to be a plate on teh left door jamb, in the front storage area and on/near the dash. I find this to be a fascinating option code and my research to date isn't producing any clear explanation as to why such an option code exists. I'll keep digging. Thanks very much!

On further reflection it seems odd that a VIN plate could be deleted at the buyer's request - I thought US regs specified where they were located and that most removable parts (body panels, etc) on cars of that era had to have a sticker with the VIN?

yeah i was thinking that too . i thought the removal of any VIN from a car was highly illegal .. but who knows . maybe it just has to be there once .. maybe you can remove some of them but not all ?

Took a look at the car this eve ( raining about as hard as you can imagine right now!). I have located the ID plate on the driver's side A pillar and the sticker with VIN on the drivers side door jamb. Pulled back carpet around the under hood area, but no sign of the riveted ID plate. May not be looking in the right spot, though.
I'm sure someone on this Forum knows what this Option Code is all about. I'm a dog on a bone on this now. Thanks for all the help!

Is the COA your only source of this information? They have been known to be inaccurate, I know the one for my car has several errors.
I'd want to confirm via the options stickers on the trunk lid / maintenance book, or the window sticker, assuming any of these are available.

It is the COA that I am triggering off of. I have the factory option sticker in place ( under the hood) and it does not indicate the 912 option code. To that end, it may be an error. I do know that these cars commonly came through with a riveted ID plate. I can't locate that. Not sure where to look, to be honest. I was under the impression from other research that it was under the hood.
Beyond that, I am generally curious as to why such an option code would even exist. My car is a very original , low mileage example and I have documentation dating back to the beginning. I am comfortable that I know what I have and that the COA is at least mostly accurate. Probably trying to source information that isn't all that important. Thanks for your help, though. Steve

Definitely let us know what your findings are, it's a great way to learn what kinds of manufacturing deviations and options existed years ago.
When I was having my 911E inspected the guys were having a hard time finding the VIN since it wasn't on the A-Pillar. It was on all the other areas but they were expecting to see it on the A-Pillar. Being a car that was exported from Germany to Mexico and from Mexico to US, who knows what the country requirements were. It does have all the other body stampings.
