Default Rennlist thoughts on this targa

Hi guys,

Saw this 76 targa recently and wanted to post some pics for the collective to analyze. It has 123k on it and has been pretty well maintained. I would definitely get a ppi, but thought I'd see what you guys can spot from the pics. Asking price is around 21k which I think is a bit high.

Something wonky about the wheels. Pedals look squared off.

Why the duel rear foglights and why the funky muffler? Love the color.

What we thought was expensive a year ago seems to be the norm now on a well kept car. Even the 2.7 You would definitely want proof though of quality engine rebuild

Cool seats !

Interesting how mid-year asking prices are now higher then the early 996's.

I was told the wheels have been replaced with polished fuchs. As far as the muffler and rear fogs, I was hoping someone might know more about either of these. I'm going to try and go see the car in soon. I've only seen the pics online and gotten some info from the seller via emails. I love the color, so I'm excited to see it in person

996 won't be "collectable" for 20 years if ever.

A couple of years ago I wouldn't touch a 2.7 for any price, as they had a bad reputation among Porsche guys, and you could buy a good SC/Carrara for the price of an engine rebuild.

There were three knocks against.

First was head-stud pulling because of Mag case and overheating issues. Second was the overheating caused by the thermal reactor emission system (hence above). Third was the optics of crash bumpers with narrow-body.

However, with SC/Carrara prices spiraling toward $30K, the 2.7 may represent a good buy-in to a classic 911.

Styling is purely subjective, and the after-market has developed fixes for the engine, so a rust-free 2.7 with proper engine rebuild should be a very nice car.

Understand that many of these cars passed through the hands of folks who couldn't afford to maintain them correctly, so a really thorough PPI by a really knowledgeable P-Car specialist is a must.

But if the car passes muster, $20K is not over-priced in this market, IMHO.

BTW... wheels will have casting marks inside, if they are real Fuchs vs Re-pops, you can tell. The lights and exhaust are no big deal, this is bolt-on/off.

Frankly, the OEM exhaust system on these cars should go in the dumpster, unless you are doing concourse, so quality after-maket exhaust system may be a plus for a driver.
