My Wife WTB Any 911 Under $10,000
For almost two years now I have been obsessively spending time with my 964. I absolutely love the car and take very good care of it. My lovely (hot) wife never really got it but happily put up with with my obsession because she loves me. We have a one year old son and she even bought a car seat that would fit in the 964. I thought it was very sweet and supportive. Other than that she was totally hands off and I got a lot of comments about the cost of upcoming school. ( I think, to discourage my search for a 1969 to 1973 911 that I have been quietly conducting).
This weekend everything changed.....My wife went to a Porsche rally with me this weekend to Oxford, MS from Memphis. It was her first PCA event. She surprisingly really enjoyed it. She enjoyed it so much, with the other 30 plus cars of all ages, before it was over she said I want to find a beat up 911 to drive everyday. That would be her car and only her car. One that I would not obsess over.
I showed her PCA, Pelican, Rennlist, eBay, Autotempest and she has gone nuts. She looks like one of us when we are on the hunt. We had lunch today and she never looked up from the classified listings on her phone once I showed her the Rennlist and the app I use to view Pelican. This is a woman that does not watch TV and could care less where her phone is most of the time.
This brings me to my point. She is looking for a 911 under $10,000. Mileage is not an issue. Some bumps and scratches are required. So if you have something you want her to see please email it to brown@gillprop.com. I will definitely show her. Coupe, Targa, and Cabs are welcome. Any colors are welcome. Beggars cannot be choosers. Lets see how tough these little cars really are.
Thank you to both the Rennlist and Pelican communities. Both are full of great people.
UPDATE: She is now looking for a strong running daily driver for around $20,000. She says she is going to drive it everyday. You guys have been very helpful. She is creating a RL account today. I am sure you guys can continue to help her out. I told her to post a pic of herself if she really wants a car.

Sorry, you're about 5 years too late. Probably any $10K 911 you will find is such a POS, that it will cost you huge $$$ just to keep running.
If cosmetics are not an issue, you might find a half decent 2.7 or SC for under $20K, but you'll have to look long and hard.
If you have a hard limit of $10K, you can find a nice 944 or maybe even a 2.5l Boxster that might be a decent car.
Market for air-cooled 911s is shifting fast.

ou can get a decent 928 or 944 for that price... a 911 will be about 20K as an entry level. I like the way the 944 drives, close to the 911, and the 928 is a cool car but needs lots of attention

The 911 market has REALLY changed in the last 18 months with no sign of abatement. The only good part is that a good, solid example holds its value quite well and can appreciate beyond the initial investment.

I agree. This is her budget. She will either prove us wrong or change the budget. I am glad I got in when I did. I wish I was this obsessed 10 years ago. The market is dramatically shifting. I just wish I had more cars.

Hey, I tried to talk my brother into buying a 300SL Mercedes for $5,500 back in the day... I never let him forget it.
IMHO, if your wife really want's an old 911, swallow hard, and buy a really nice one for about $25K. They are actually pretty inexpensive to maintain, you can get collector car insurance, and there are companies out there that will finance collector cars.
If you buy a good car, they will not depreciate. In the long run, it is still cheaper than buying a new Toyota.

You can finance via most credit unions plus they offer great rates. 10k as mentioned above will get you a car missing the engine. 15k seems to be the number for a great deal but those cars are snagged up as the ad is getting posted so I hope you live on the internet

As others mentioned I don't believe a $10K 911 exists. If so, you better be very machanically handy and have deep pockets because you will need to spend more than the original $10K to get the car running.

That is great. I think her budget has increased in the past 24 hours. I woke up to 30 emails from her which were all cars. She is totally obsessed. She sees the value in paying more. I have enjoyed everyone's comments. I do hope she pulls the trigger. It will be fun to go to the next PCA event in two cars.

Have to say I'm shocked at what's going on with air-cooled prices recently. Having owned two (still have one) I liked to occasionally check the for sale pages just out of curiosity and for friends now and then who were checking out same cars. Holy Cow! I can't believe the asking prices for G50 Carreras...as much as I'd like to believe my cars gone up up value I really have a hard time believing these cars are selling at some of these prices...don't get me wrong, I'd be happy if they were but they seem optimistic. On a related note, about 10 years ago I really started to take a liking to what we now call the long hoods...I'm kicking myself for not taking action back then.

Super low mile cars are commanding high asking prices, but where they actually sell is another matter, but I have seen some auction results on these cars in the $30-40K range, and still see some reasonable looking private sales in the $25K asking range.
THe whole collector car market is crazy today, so there is a significant "Fear/Greed" factor going on.... hard to know where reality lies, but IMHO, buying a quality air-cooled 911 is still probably a solid long term purchase.
