Default Cost for Work/Repairs on 2000 911 Carrera

Hi, all. I have a friend who is selling his 2000 911 Carrera with 100k miles, and he offered it to me for $12,000. According to the mechanic it needs the following:

-Rear main seal is leaking
-Differential is leaking
-needs a tune-up

Car has clean title, compression tests are good. Is this a good deal, or should I go for one that is problem-free? My fear is paying more for one just to find it has one or more of these problems.

Anyway, do these items need to be addressed *immediately* (could I just add oil for a while and replace the rear seal later, etc.)? What would be the cost of these repairs?

Trying to decide as soon as I can. Any input would be appreciated!

You have wandered into the wrong section. You need to find (I think) the 996 forum.

....then research the term "996 IMS bearing". There is a reason your friend is only asking for $12,000. It is likely the IMS has not been addressed.

Here is a small sampling of 2000+ims+bearing

Wow..... so the culprit could be a bad IMS... and if so, the engine could be in seriously bad shape. Perhaps this is the reason the engine could "use a tune-up". Man, oh man....

Any way to know for sure without tearing out the tranny?

These are very valid questions and need to be address on the watercooled technical forum-->996

The RMS leak can lead to an IMS failure which would cause total engine failure. there is no way to tell without removing the transmission (I think). There is an aftermarket solution (unknown $). You could get an idea by doing an oil change and cutting the oild filter in half to see if there are any metal shavings.

My knowledge regarding this is negligible.

As noted above kindly by Mr. Lamps, please search the forum for this topic--it has been addressed ad nauseum, and there will be literally hours of threads to read and there will be all the info you need.

Hint: go to Google.com and search "site:rennlist.com 996 IMS failure" or "site:rennlist.com RMS leaking"

Oh yeah--and good luck. The fun of owning a Porsche starts with the search. The 996 models, 1999-2004, are very well priced for the intro to the 911 world.
