Not enough time to warm up.

The cars aren't fragile, but they are getting a little long in the tooth, so it all depends on previous care and luck, as to what may need to be repaired along the way. The market is so stupid, that you'd be money ahead getting a $2K Honda beater for DD, and keep the 911 for fun.

I installed the most extreme of Griffiths A/C units with additional vents in my '79sc and she blows wicked cold and strong.

Israel is a HOT climate and generally i'm cold in my car even on the hottest days!! This is a testament that the A/C can be fixed.

I second the Kuehl (Griffiths) system. I also did the full upgrade (sans compressor and rear condenser) and installed it myself over a long weekend (about 2.5 years ago). It wasn't that difficult, just time consuming. I had the system charged up by my local wrench and he was blown away by the low vent temps (in the 30's). Two summers later, the system is still blowing ice cold with no issues at all. It can be done for about $3.5K if you are willing to get a little dirty and do it yourself. Otherwise, add another $2K for labor.

$3.5K to $5.5K is a huge investment just for A/C for a car that is worth around only $30K. I think that is part of the point in terms of value / being able to resolve the issue. Sure if you put enough money at a problem it can be solved at a cost. This solution may not be practical for all. There is no way I would make that investment in my car.
