I think it was 4"-I got the adapter years ago from Evo. It had a nipple for the breather.
OK, maybe I can find a shorter filter that has the larger diameter. This one has the 3" opening and just fits with the hinge.

The other pictures are an attempt to show where I want a bracket to go that will hold up the back side of the MAF. Without the stock filter box the back of the MAF is free to just flop around. I think I need to fab up a bracket using the lower rubber mount location that the stock filter sat on and the lower forward bolt hole on the MAF/BMW adapter. Does that make sense?

Why did you draw weenies all over your engine?

My adapter Made a 90 deg turn toward the rear of the car-probably why the larger one fit. Had a supporting leg down to the old airbox perch.

I have had the square K&N for 6+ years and will keep it if I don't figure out the cone filter soon.

Ed, I need to find a tighter radious turn. The one I had was a 4" diameter and the filter hit the hinge. Of course if i went with R hinges...

Here's good 'ol Ruby-with filter, and without, so you can see the adapter.

PS- This is why you don't run the K&N in the airbox-wanted the open space.

Hey- I just noticed, I sure had a lot of sparkplugs!

And, for some reason the electrical cover on the LH side was off in both pics-I didn't drive her around like that.

I see you had a different shaped cruise control unit than mine (now removed) and why did you still have the grounding straps with a fiberglass duck? You obviously had access to nice Texas cadmium too. A much better look. And Cowabunga on the Magnacores. Loved that car.

Question: Has anybody ever swapped out the rear engine mount on a cabriolet for the normal coupe/targa version? I couldn't pull the fan/alternator out because of the silly floating shock thing. Engine would be much cleaner otherwise.

I had an operational courtesy light back there.

Test fitting more Hella lights.

Going with body color so that William's head doesn't explode.

Woo Hoo... Even got them wired up before the Norco wore off.

Bolted the duck on for the first time since paint and clear. Color is a bit off under the florescent lights. Hopefully after I buff the clear it looks a bit better. At this point I'm good no mater how it turns out I've had so much fun with her.

You may notice she's got a bit of negative camber back in her rear and sits like a stink bug.

About time! She also looks high enough for Paris-Dakar.....hopefully, she'll settle down. When will she drive again?

(I got mine together this weekend, and have about 20 miles on all the new bits, I'm calling the project a success)
