Default Top End and Bottom End rebuild

Hello:

I am wondering when people mentioned about the TOP end and Bottom end rebuild, what do the shop perform to consider as a rebuild?

What would be approximate cost to do just a top end rebuild?

What would be approximate cost to do both Top and Bottom end rebuild (the whole engine overhaul)

Thanks in advance!

A top end job is usually a "repair" rather than a "rebuild." There is a wide range of costs involved with different year cars, so let's talk about a 1978-83 SC. Top end will definitely include a valve job done to the cylinder heads, which can include new valves, valve guides, valve seals, grind the seats, and maybe replace the springs. Top end can also include rod bearing/bolt/nut replacement, cylinder head stud replacement, piston/cylinder (or piston ring) replacement, timing chain tensioner and chain guide replacement, etc. Cost can go from $3500 up to more than $10K.

A bottom end repair can include main bearing replacement, intermediate shaft replacement, timing chain replacement, rod bearing/bolt/nut replacement, oil pump work, polish the crankshaft and recondition the connecting rods, etc. A bottom end is usually done along with a top end; mileage is usually a factor regarding to do both, or just the top.

A complete engine repair can cost upwards of $16K. Other engines, such as 930s, 986s and 996s can easily soar past $20K. The things to consider are how many miles are on the engine, what kind of maintenance has it had, how was the car used/driven (commuter, high speed time trials, club racing, or just a few DEs). Exceptions are premature failures such as the intermediate shaft bearing on 986s/987s/996s and 997s. Every engine has its own story to tell, and only that story can determine how far into an engine, for a repair, is far enough.
