I evidently ordered the wrong year muffler as the tip did not line up with the bumper opening.

This was bugging me so I drove the car thirty miles to my son's house. He is much more skilled than me and I knew he could fix the muffler. After doing some measuring and making some marks on the tip, Matt cut it off about a half inch from the muffler. He then cut a half inch off the tip. After holding it up to the car, he proceeded to cut, grind and hammer until the shape was correct at the muffler end and the tip was perfectly centered in the opening. He did a great job and now I am no longer embarrassed.

Last summer I took the car to the body shop before I really had a chance to debug anything. I have been going through that process. I recently re-installed the trunk and license plate lights that I had removed prior to having the car painted.

If you have read all of this thread (you must be a glutton for punishment) you will have seen that I replaced the very restrictive full emission exhaust with a 1974 and earlier system. Since putting the car back on the road, I have noticed that it pops and spits through the exhaust. My best guess was that the new exhaust is so much less restrictive that the engine is now running lean. I also noticed that if I removed the oil filler cap to check the oil, the idle would deteriorate all the way to dying. So I decided to visit with an expert.

John Forbes of Black Forest Racing in Denver, NC has been racing and servicing air cooled Porsche's for many, many years. I drove an hour to visit with John. After he finished the phone call he was on, I told him why I was there. When he saw the car all he said was "Wow". I was already feeling much better. He then went back into the shop to get his receptionist, his son and the mechanic to take a look at the car. My head was really growing now as they ooh'ed and aah'ed over the car. Many photos were taken. Finally, John says let's go for a ride to see how it runs. We drove for about fifteen minutes, including a stop to remove a baby turtle from the road (John saves turtles!). He soon heard what I had been hearing and said he could fix it back at the shop.

As he went into his shop to get the tool to richen the fuel injection, I heard him say it runs even better than it looks. More head growing ensued. I had cautioned him that the fuel distributor was flush against the insulation but he said that was normal. It took him a good five minutes to get the tool into the adjusting hole. Once he began making the mixture richer the idle speed climbed to about 1400 RPM. He adjusted the idle, fiddled with the adjustment a bit more, adjusted the idle again, and, voila, no more spitting. It idled so much smoother and when I checked the oil today, the idle did not change when I removed the filler cap. So it was a trip well worth making.

My other issue was that I did not have the shifter properly adjusted. Again, if you read the thread, you would see that, because it had been many years since I had dropped a 911 motor, I had mistakenly unhooked the coupler at the shifter spline coupling. Which meant I had to start over on adjusting the linkage. He said I was close but probably one or two splines off. I remedied that yesterday and it now shifts like it should.

Today I had a chance to get both the '67 and the '07 out in the driveway together. Here is what 40 years of difference in 911's looks like.

I love the fact the the 997 dash hearkens back to the original dash design.

Beginning with the 911SC engine, this car has quite a few SC parts. That list would include the electric sunroof, the gauges, the three point harnesses, the power windows, and power brakes. At one time it also had a Cork SC interior. When the door panels were replaced with black RS type panels, the top trim piece was painted black to match. Over time some of the black paint had been scratched, revealing the original cork color. Also the black paint was a bit too shiny.

To remedy this I removed the trim pieces, wet sanded them, cleaned them up and painted them. On my 1964 Corvette restoration from a few years ago I had used a SEM product made for interior pieces. The resulting finish was outstanding so I picked up a can of satin black paint. The finish now is much closer to the black RS panel vinyl and is much less shiny. I am pleased with the results. Looks like new again.

Very nice. I've got the same door cards and pull straps. LOVE THEM. Everyone freaks out at them....in a good way.

Now that we have the motorhome, we plan on traveling quite a bit. Which does not leave much time for the car. So I have decided to sell it. Not sure what it will bring but I am giving eBay a try.

I have received very nice compliments today about this thread. I really appreciate all of them.

If you have cruised through enough forums, you have come across some pretty nasty happenings. People make crude comments, they speak loudly about things they know nothing about, and many are outright unpleasant. I posted this thread on three popular Porsche forums for over two years. During that time, I did not have one nasty post on any of those three forums. I had constructive comments about something I had either already screwed up or was about to screw up, but no nasty comments.

I have also posted similar threads about Camaro's and Corvette's on the appropriate forums with similar results. In this oftentimes uncivil world, I find it refreshing that car people are the way they are. If I have helped some people with this thread, that is only right as I have been helped by people in those threads I have followed. These kind of forums are truly great examples of "passing it forward."

Thanks in part to this thread, the car sold in less than a day for an amount that we both thought was fair. The new buyer has followed this thread for the past two years and is even more of an enthusiast than I am who has a number of special cars. The car is going to a good home where it will be appreciated and driven!!

I have been asked what my next project will be. We will be doing some traveling but it would not surprise me if some project car finds me. They have a way of doing that!!
