Default 1986 911 engine starts but run almost at an idle

Due to surgery my 1986 911 stayed idle for over 3 years. The engine starts real good but runs at an idle speed. Took out as much gas from tank as possible, put fresh gas in tank, still have same problem. The car was not ran for over three years, but was running great before. I had considered selling it recently, but am having second thoughts about doing so. One guy came over to look at the car during that time. I think he may have sabotaged it but this is not positive. Could something have been done to make it run as described.

I'm perplexed as well. Is your throttle cable broken?

I would lean toward throttle cable as well if it will not accelerate.

Try moving the throttle by hand.

Default 911 will not idle

It is not the throtle that is stuck, or does not move it will not accelerate past an idle even if moved by hand

Sounds like a mechanical issue at the throttle body.

As to response in RPM changes when manually advancing the throttle, sure sounds like a fuel linkage somewhere is broken,..

I'd get that fuel filter changed out ASAP..

Best of luck!

Changed the fuel filter, runs a little better but still will not run past an idle. Removed as much gas from tank as possible, put fresh gas in tank same results. After setting idle for over three years has created problems. The car had no issues prior.

So. rotating the throttle butterfly by hand results in no changes at all- no change in engine speed??

I'm sorry, but that isn't possible. If the engine coughs and spits or dies and will not accelerate smoothly/at all when you manipulate the throttle by hand, then that is one thing- but to open the throttle butterfly with no effect at all is simply impossble. You must be moving something other than the throttle plate with your hand. Unless the throttle lever is moving without turning the throttle shaft...which I think would take a lot of force to break it and put it in that condition...

Did you try opening the engine compartment lid before manually operating the throttle??

I'm sorry, but your descriptive ability is surely lacking. I cannot figure out exactly what is going on with your car. You need to be more specific.

I remember a similar situation from many (25) years ago. A timing chain/tensioner had failed, and bent most of the valves on one side of the engine. The car would start, would idle surprisingly smooth (on three cylinders), but would not accept gas/rev. That one had us very confused for a little while! A leak down test found the problem.
