Interior smells like gasoline
Hey everyone,
I've noticed that the interior of my car (87 911 coupe) is really starting to smell like gasoline. It's totally fine when I'm driving. In fact, the smell goes away. However, when I park the car overnight, the smell is fairly strong in the morning. I haven't noticed anything dofferet with the car. Any ideas?

I have the same problem and cannot seem to correct it. I tried the following with only minimal elimination of odor, which may help with yours. Replaced fuel sender gasket which is on top of tank in trunk, replaced gas cap, replaced cloth braided lines in an around that plastic box near fuse box. My mechanic checked fuel pump area and did not see any weeping of gas. When I open trunk though after it sits, I do smell gas fumes. I may try fuel sender gasket again since I did not put some vaseline on it to ensure a good seal. Let me know how you make out. I may replace large rubber hose that goes from fuel filler neck to tank.

Have you done any work to the fuel system at all lately? Any drilling or work on the shifter tunnel?
Any signs of drips anywhere? This is obviously bad, and isn't right, and needs full attention. Don't forget the cannister in the front wheel well

One thing that commonly causes a fuel smell is a missing or disconnected overflow tank that's part of the vapor recovery system. the tank is in the left front fender ahead of the wheel. Make sure it's there and the two hoses are connected to it, and also check the hoses on the other side of the wall in the trunk.

No work done on my fuel system either. Cannister and all lines appear intact and no leaks anywhere. I'll have to go back out and check the overflow tank

I smelled fuel in my car when was parked for a while then went away when driving. Until my car caught on fire at Summit Point. The metal filter linking the carburator was cracked which I could not see. It ended up braking and the car caught on fire. I regret I did not give it more attention!

Are the vapor collection lines in your trunk brown and hard like this?
If so, one can be not vapor tight and allowing fumes to be released.
You can replace these fairly easily. Be sure to get hose that is gasoline rated (the clear PVC at the hardware store is not).

Sadly, the fuel system continues to age--and age rapidly. You certainly have a fuel leak which causes that smell to happen enough to notice. Depending upon how close to concours condition your car is to start with, you can expect to trace the problem by starting underneath and looking for obviously signs. Fuel leaks that are slight will dissipate in the course of driving the car, but the vapors will clue you in. If your car's bottom is clean, start to check for evidence of fuel leaks. Start around the fuel filler area and around the tank--recall that you have good sized high pressure lines taking fuel to and from the tank to the left rear of the engine bay. Most fuel smells that you detect are from the front of the car. (The rear ones are masked well by the engine smells). Good luck.

Found this pic from an old post on pelican. I'm still hunting down the gas smell and I'm gonna replace the lines to the venting tank. I've searched to try and find the part number for the lines highlighted in red (ignore the one to the venting tank), but I wanted to see if anyone can confirm them before I order? This is what I've found 999 181 189 50. Also, anyone know the right part # for the smaller black line that goes to the vent tank?
