Default How I repaired my windshield washer fluid pump.

My windshield washer would not spray. I could hear a click and the motor was getting 12 volts. I did this procedure with only the AC condenser blower removed from the car for other purposes. I pryed the rubber inserts off and disconnected the hoses. You are going to need to catch over a gallon of slow flowing fluid if your reservoir is full. I used 2 liter soda bottles. I had to cut the outlet hose because it is a stretch fit and had hardened around the nipple. I disassembled the pump using a 5.5 mm socket and found that the brass gears had locked up from corrosion. I soaked the brass in vinegar for a short while until I got bored and just took the gears out and sanded them instead. Coca-cola or another stronger acid should work better. I resealed the bottom gasket with RTV since it was cracking and I broke it in one place. I removed the rubber inserts that hold the bracket onto the body by pulling and rotating in a circular pattern. If you break these it is going to cost about $30 for new ones. I put the rubber inserts back on the bracket and lubricated them with a bit of dish soap. I used the same small circular pattern to get them to go through the body.

One more pic below.

I went hrough exactly the same procedure and lubed it up with the grease that came with my hose reel, waterproof grease I think.
It is amazing how well things can work once they are taken apart, cleaned , and reassembled. Good work.

I have gone through many of these with no luck at rebuilding them. I think I keep a spare supply of at least 1 or 2 of the around.

The only thing I can add to this is that I've never, ever filled mine and tried it in over 7 years. I assumed it would be futile, and saved myself a project.

Why were you unable to repair them? What was the problem? I thought they were rather simple just be sure to hook the wires up correctly.

Houpty, I usually can't get them to spin fast enough, or they leak after I've messed with them. We have hard water here, so I started putting distilled water in the washer, but then I got mold in the reservoir.

The windshield washer is a pain in the ***. I think the only reason I mess with it is that I've got some sort of obsession with having everything that I own either working well or it goes in the trash.

We have windshield washers?

Who would take the car out in the rain?

My headlight washers work, but the windshield washers don't. I'm assuming mine's the switch on the column.

Rain is a personal preference but my problem is the bug collection I acquire. I need the juice to get the bugs off so I can see where I am going. You are going fast enough to kill bugs, right?

Fred, I don't have headlight washers but I assume they run on the same switch since the one in front of my cruise is for my washer.

I removed mine to keep the road crud from collecting in the fender well.

Future plans are to install the smaller tank (intensive washer) used in the Carrera which fits inside the trunk.

I am going to bump this thread up since I just used it to fix my washer pump again. I had not been driving the car much for about 2 years and the gears had locked up. I just needed to turn the pump by hand and it freed the gears up. Yeah!

The headlight washers have their own switch.
