Default Alternative Fuel Injectors, 3.2L Carrera

About a year ago I started on an idea of finding alternative (cheaper) fuel injectors for the 84-89 Carrera 3.2L engine. The stock injectors are Bosch 0-280-150-158 and after having them flowed and tested they are simple Low Impedance (2.4ohms) and 24lb injectors. So I found another injector that is a great match it's a 0-280-150-364 injector which is also Low Impedance 24lb.

But how could I know they function exactly the same? My car has a WideBandO2 system with full recording ability. So with the stock newly serviced injectors I simply did a 2nd gear WOT run from 1000-6800RPMs and recorded my AFR, my car is tuned to run about 13.0AFR across the RPMs at WOT. Once I had this baseline I simply took out the 158s and dropped in the 364s. The results where a nice surprise! The 364s are spot on, well maybe a tad lean, they ran at 13.1AFR under same test conditions. Also the car idles and runs just as it did with the 158s.

Here are the results from the 2 runs:

Here are few pictures of the stock 158 vs the alternative 364.

You will notice the 364 has a metal tip rather than the plastic tip on the 158. Bosch designed the metal tip with the idea that they will not heat soak after an engine is shutdown. It is believed that heat soak is what cloggs the injectors. Not real sure about the theory here. At any rate the 364 performs as good as the 158 and they can be found much cheaper.

Thanks for posting your findings. What is the price difference? What are you using to log your AFRs?

Other injectors that may work are:
0280-150-159 is a 944 injector and folks have reported these work well in the 3.2L
0280-150-360 plastic tip version of the 364 injector
0280-150-352 should work, it's a lo-imp 24lb
0280-150-201 BMW injector should also work, but stay away for this one as they are prone to leak

I think the forum does not want us to sell products, I do not sell these but do know who does for about $24.00 each. Just do a google on 0280150364 you'll find them.

My WideBandO2 setup is a TechEdge 2J1 everthing was under $300.00 see www.wbo2.com

Nice find and research. At that price you can buy 6 for almost the price of the standard.

I don't mind at all the thought of running a dodge fuel injector.

Funny because they look so similar to the ones in the Taurus SHO (Also 24#-hr low-impedance), which you can get ACCEL ones for from Summit. The Bimmer guys reportedly use SHO injectors as an "upgrade". I have a few sets still kicking around the garage, I should pull one & compare.

If you're not the one selling them, I know of no rules against posting a source. Pelican would be a different story from an ethics standpoint, but here we're all helping one another.

My research suggests that any 24lb lo-imp injector should run in our 3.2L. If the SHO injector is the same shape and mechanical size and fits go ahead and try it. In my research I came across these SHO injectors but my injector guy said they are diffrent size at the top of the injector where it connects to the fuel rail, but he could be wrong. If you have some of these it would be great to compare them to the stock 158s.

Also, double check the resistance, should be 2.2 to 2.7 ohms. You don't want to drop below 2.2ohms but being above this is fine.

Could you post a picture of the SHO injector?

Is this the injector? ACCEL 151255 shows this to be a 24lb (255cc) lo-imp injector.

Hey Sal,

What timing, I just tested my injectors and they are in need of replacing. You the man, EE Man!!!

Thanks Brother!

Jim

Oh Snap, I just went on their site and they sell Reconditioned Bosch OEM's for $29.99:

PORSCHE 911 SERIES 6 1985 3299CC MPI 930 606 120 00 852-12113 MM 0280150158 $ 29.99

http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...INJECTORS.html

Unfortunately the 364, 159 & 352's are no longer available or listed: http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...64/4615914.htm

But the 360 Plastic Tip version is available for $24.99 each or $22.99 in 4 packs (I think from their catalog): http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...64/4706078.htm

Just an observation,

MM Site states these flow rates:

0-280-150-158 (OEM)
21.8 <<< LBS/HR
229.1
164.8
36.25
2.5

0-280-150-360 (364 Alternative but same Specs)
25.7 <<< LBS/HR
270.1
194.3
43.5
3

I know you did the real world test, but may be that is why you got a slight lean reading?

Sal,
I'd have to go back through my notes (closed down the shop a couple of years ago), but yes, I do have a few sets of the factory ones left over. The stock V6 DOHC 3.0L SHO (pink tops) flow just under 24#-hr, and the V6 DOHC 3.2L (purple tops) flow just over 24#-hr. Since the EEC compensates on the SHO, it's only during WOT you'd notice the difference on a modded 3.0L. I used the Accels which were around $240 / set from memory.

I just jumped on Summit, I'm not seeing the ones we used (they show 14.4 ohms now)...

I'll send off an email to a buddy who worked for the mfg...

Spoke to MM, Rob they have plenty of the 364's in stock they no longer offer the 158's due to consistant leaks and returns.

Will be pulling the trigger on these puppies soon.

Thanks again Sal, you a life saver

I can confirm what Draco is saying. I think I might have bought the last 7 158s from Porsche available in the US, lol.

One was completely non-op. I had a bad misfire, and it turned out one of the brand new injectors from Porsche was not opening up. It was hard to find a new 158 injector and when I did the plastic was a different color. I wonder if the spray pattern makes a difference or if the nozzle length has any effect.

Rob at MM stated all the 364 have been flow tested and resistance verified plus 1 year warranty. Not bad for $22-24 bucks X 6
