Targa Bar from black to the stainless
#5
When I bought my Targa, the paint was so faded that therre were two large spots where the metal was showing through. Now either it is galvanized metal or it is stainless under there, because there was no sign of rust on the exposed metal. I think Porsche just simply painted the stainless steel.

I have a 1980 911SC Targa....it is red with black trim. My Targa bar's paint is "okay", but it could use either a fresh paint job or hopefully, I can strip it to a stainless look.

Tough to say...when I pulled mine out, I was parting a car. I.E. I didn't need to think about putting it back in...so the rear windsheild was out and I was trashing all the seals, so I didn't need to save them. Maybe somebody else will pipe in...

Actually all you have to remove is the skin on top of the bar. It is either stainless or aluminum. The strength comes from the actual bar underneath the skin. There are two bolts on each side, accessed through the wheel well area that allow the skin to be removed.
I think Porsche used a multi coat polyurathane paint so you would need some type of paint remover to get down to the metal finish. Here is a link that shows what the skin looks like without the paint and some additional photos that show exactly what's involved in removing it.
