It is a little strange on a motronic 3.2. First you need to put a jumper in on the test connection on the left side of the engine compartment. It is round with the place for a three prong plug to go in. The prongs are male and in the shape of a triangle. Once you cross the top and the right plug. You then adjust the screw in the center by the idle control valve. Otherwise the motronics adjusts the idle. You may want to check for vacuum leaks. That will cause the idle to go low also. Take a can of intake cleaner and spray around the intake flange and the hoses on the back of the Air fuel box. It will increase the idle where there is a leak. To see what I mean, spray some in the air intake.

do you have any pics of where the idle adjusting screw is
could you please explain the concept of the triangle pluge i presume i take it apart and when you refer to cross do you mean shorting two of the contacts with a wire if so which contacts, once the idle has been adjusted and the plug connected how it origionally was doesnt the ecu adjust the idle back to what it was
any idea what the idle should be on a 1987 3.2

911 2: Setting the idle on your car is an involved process that requires a CO% machine. Are you in the states, and does your car have a catalytic converter?

i have purchased a bentley mannual and it doesnt state anything about jumpers infact it says only to disconnect the oxygen sensor and adjust the idle
my car doesnt seem to have a oxygen sensor

The idle adjustment process is VERY simple once the engine is running properly
and the mixture is correct. You just turn the idle screw counter-clockwise a
small amount.
Before doing the above check the following:
1. the idle switch is closing
2. the idle valve is working properly
3. there are no intake air leaks
4. the CO is about 1.0 to 1.5% at idle w/o the O2 sensor
Note: It's not necessary to bypass the jumper points as many indicate.

hugh r do you have a link
i checked co today it was 0.2% HC were 1600 any conclusions from this
worst thing is the car started popping on idle managed to stop this by riching up to 0.3 but didnt go any further in case there was an air leak, the car now runs like its running on five cylinders ie can feel a rough vibration through car and its down on power any ideas what has caused this been told the popping will not damage the engine so its something else any ideas please
