Question 911SC rebuild

Does anyone have any recommendations for a rebuild shop in the Southern California area. I have a 911SC with 260K on the original motor and trans.
Has anyone had any work done by Motor Meister in Downey?

Regarding Motor Meister, you should do a search both here and on the Pelican forums.

Ollie's is great for machine work; don't know if they actually build engines though.

I had the motor on my '81SC rebuilt by Otto's in Venice and I've been very happy. The motor is stonger than ever and runs very nicely. You can get the phone number at www.ottosvenice.com.

Depending on the purpose (track vs street) I've heard good things about Werks II (Burbank) and TRE (North Hollywood). I've heard many negative things about Motor Meister on the boards, but have no 1st hand experience.

Neil over at Performance Developments has done all of my machine work for all of my motors and valve jobs from 930 to 993 and 996. he is second to none in thouroughness, quality and details and his work never has to be second guessed which is very important and his price reflects this but is definatley money well spent as I have never had a single miscalculation or problem with him.

I have personally never used Ollies, but I know people who have and I have never heard of them having any problems either.

as far as Motor Meister, I don't know why everyone always is being negitive about them, Ive delt with them and they are very professional and Roy took time to make sure I got everything I needed. they are a busy shop and have been around awhile, and as we all know you dont stay in business long or stay busy if your work isn't good so draw your own conclusions.

I second this, I think it will be enlightening. And remember, being cheap goes a long way for a lack of quality, longevity in the business world doesn't require quality.

Oh yeah, I've heard lots of good things about TRE, Tyson participates on the 911 board on Pelican.

a motor is definatly the last place you wanna skimp on funds, even if it means you put the old exhaust on for a few months to pay for a complete race balance. I pulled out all the stops with my 3.2 and I'm building a completely bullet proof motor with the best of everything because I know that I'm going to keep the car untill the day I die and I will never have to take the motor out and apart again. thats a good feeling huh?

on the other hand if I was a dirt bag and wanted to do a cheap job to claim "rebuilt motor" when I turn around and sell it to make a buck, then I would consider reusing things such as dilivar studs and valve springs and not getting the crank sufficently hardchromed. who needs to zyglow the cylinders, they're fine. hahaa yeah right. but it happens.
Thats another thing to watch for when buying a car is the "rebuilt motor". Ok by whom and how was it done? impossible to tell unless you tear it down, or it comes with recepits from a reputable shop. otherwise you could end up with a pile of motor parts that were slapped together with no intention of longevity

Also, replace the oil pump.... a, ahhh, "friend" tried to save a buck and ended up having to re-do the motor when the pump failed.... cheap out now, repent in liesure... sort of like pay me now, AND pay me later....

have your pump checked first before you run out and buy one. The only time they really fail is if the engine has had a major failure (spun bearing) and the pump sucks up metal and isn't checked and cleaned thouroughly. those things are close to $700 last time I checked.

Swen, you wouldn't have happened to have that SC serviced at Circle Imports by chance?

It runs well once it is warm but at startup it lets out a lot of smoke. I can also tell that the engine is very tired. It still runs smooth but it should have more power than it does right now.

I have never had it serviced there and I have no records from the previous owners from there either.
