Where can I find procedure for converting my '86 Cab A/C from R12 to R34? Also, might this be the wrong thing to do? I find it more difficult every two years (my current frequency to recharge) to find a shop to recharge my A/C with R12, and expense!

Any good A/C shop should have a book that will tell you what has to be done to a particular model to do the conversion. In my case it was only a reciever/dryer but it can escalate to include condensers,etc. R134 reduces cooling capacity somewhat, but Wurth has a sealer/R134 enhancer that seems to bring R134 up to R12 standards, at least in my car.

I suggest you go to a good shop and get an idea on the cost and then decide. R12 is very hard to get here, and I don't regret changing mine over at all.

When I looked into this for my 81SC, it was strongly recommended that I install barrier hoses for the freon lines. As I recall, it would have been around $1000 for everything.

I had the conversion done on my '86. I don't have the invoice in front of me, however including evacuating the system and refilling with R134 was about $100. The only issue is that the R134 molecules are smaller and will escape over time. I have to recharge every year, but it is cheap and you can do it yourself...Also, it does not blow as cold...

I had my wifes ex 89 BMW 325is recharged with Freeze 12, it is able to mix with the R12 and was plenty cool enough for Fort Lauderdale.
