Default Early 944 using late ECU and late AFM

Hey all....

I've read through search that many of you have used late ECU's and late AFM's on your early 944's so that you can chip them...

I have an 84' 944 that I'm in the process of acquiring a late computer and late AFM for.

My question is two fold...number one, does it matter which late AFM and ECU you use or is any late computer for 85.5-87 fine? and same question of the AFM?

I know there were some computers that superceeded other computers....

I have a 0 280 220 064 AFM and ECU #0 261 200 077 is on the way.

Was hoping this would be a good combination for my 84' so that I could chip it.

Does the wiring harness in my car have the same connection to plug right into the later ECU?

Will the proposed gains of the chip be the same gains in the earlier cars as advertised in the later cars?

And lastly....does any have any experience with this chip?

I'm considering buying it because it has the same ECU number as the one I just bought...I'm assuming the seller is stating that this chip is for that ECU.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Any experience on all or any of this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Brian

In 944 spec we used to run off the shelf chips. However the rules took all chips away due to some custom jobs. Those of us that pulled the off the shelf aftermarket ones have noticed not change in lap times as a result.

I agree chips are a waste of $$ for an NA

That said

yes they will plug right in, I would get a matched set however I don't think there will be a problem if not as long as both are late.

I have used 86 DME and AFM in an 83 and it seemed to run smoother with the late parts.

dont bother with that chip.

any chip designed specifically for an NA 944 that netted +22/26 HP/TQ would be worth A LOT more than $25....

furthermore, raising a rev limit wont really "broaden" the powerband...the 944 band is only so wide (due to cam profile and head design), between about 3000-5500rpm, so setting the rev limit to ~7000 on an otherwise stock engine wont do anything.

also, big clue should be this statement:
The top speed governor has also been eliminated, enabling the vehicle to achieve it's "natural" top speed.
the 944 has no top speed governor. it is drag limited to its top speed of ~140.

You will need the injectors from a late car also.

But for that cheap....$30 bux to the house....

Has anyone tried them at all.....

How could all these guys on e-bay be selling all these chips with positive feedback from tons of peeps if the chips were junk???

I know NA cars suck to modify and tune on, thats why I'm willing to invest $30 bucks to see if there is anything to it....

Even if those numbers are only at the crank and you use and absurd number like 50% drivetrain loss, I'd be happy as hell to pay $30 once to get 11 rear wheel horsepower...

Who wouldn't....

There must be some truth to these or these sellers wouldn't have all the positive feedback that they have...

Anybody else have any first handed experience?

Thanks,

Brian

go ahead and try it if you want, its just extremely unlikely that it will work. be sure to use premium fuel when you put the chip in as many chips are programmed for more power by advancing spark further than stock which with the wrong fuel can make things go boooooooooooooooom

I've always run premium fuel in my 944's of past and this one too....course its just a play toy so I'm not dumping as much fuel in the car as some of you might be....

Do these cars run 87 octane from the factory?

if you look under the gas cap it should say "min. oktan RON+MON/2 = 86" so yes, 87 is perfectly fine. i too ran premium for the first 2 years of ownership before realizing i wasnt doing anything but propping up an oil company.

just to clarify, im not discounting chips for 944s entirely (although the few that ive seen have had little gains), just the one that was posted on ebay for $30.

Yes, the 83-87 cars can 87 pump gas. In 88 they upped the compression ratio so only run 91 in these cars. I run 91 in my 944 spec race car.

Let me tell you that putting a chip you will be luckey to see 2 hp and will NEVER SEE 20 hp. It just won't happen. You will hear a slightly different sound on full throttle and gas milage will decrease. However actual power output will not change. We have had cars on the dyno and can detect a very small change there (2-3hp range), but even on race track we can't see the difference in lap times. It is waste of time and money. Now if yout take the car to a dyno operator who knows 944 tuning and have him create a custom map for your motor you might see some gains. May 5-10 hp in the mid range and 2 peak hp gained. However I would expect it to cost you $1000 or more due mostly to the 8 hours of dyno time. That is only if you can find the guy with knowledge to do that and have a few other motor mods that the chip can try to take advantage of.

I bought this $38 chip from ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...%3D8%26ps%3D33

I went from 122 to 134 Hp and 126 to 136 torque. I am very happy with it.

It actually produced more power than the autothority chip that I also tried during my dyno session.

are those SAE adjusted numbers? i'm kinda skeptical. ebay $30 chips usually are nothing more than a snap on resistor package for fooling the ECU/DME sensors.
