"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. That smell, you know, that oil smell. Smells like... an oil overfill."
- Lt. Col. "Wild" Bill Kilgore
Dropping oil to lower levels (checked against running-engine readings of the dipstick) sounds like you're on the right track.- Lt. Col. "Wild" Bill Kilgore
(Premature to assume valve guides, IMO, till that's done.)
Good luck, trooper.

An oil over fill causes smoke .
Been there done that , aint going back .
The extra oil goes into the intake system via the oil tank vent .
When the dry sump pump picks up oil and air , it pumps it into the oil tank , the air / blowby is sent into the intake system via a tube . If you overfill the oil tank , the oil goes out that very same tube and gets sent right into your cylinders .
If your cars running ok , take it out for a real nice long drive to burn off the oil thats gotten into your cylinders and exhaust .

So I've sucked a liter out of the filler neck when it was nice and hot, went for a quick blast....seems to have worked.

I always refill while the engine is running.
Lets you check the level.
The overfull vent is in the tank, not the filler tube so there's no risk (or we'd all have oil in our intakes).
