While upgrading the Cayman brake ducts to the 996GT3RS style is an option, it was too many $$ for me. While lurking over on the 997 forum, I learned of a lower cost alternative. 997GT3 ducts are only about 30 bucks a set, much more in my price range! At that price I thought I'd give them a try.

My first couple pics show stock and gt3 ducts side by side. While the size of the ducts aren't much different, the shape of the gt3 ducts is more 'cupped' and there are a couple of ridges. To me, this looks like they will direct air more efficiently to the rotor and not allow as much to spill off the edge of the duct.

Install is quite easy. The thing to concentrate on are the two strap like sections of plastic that circle the control arm. Once you pop them apart, the stocker will pull out easily. Also keep in mind the straps as you put the new ones in. The ends of the strap sections have to go around the arm and snap together.

The last two pics show the gt3 and stock ducts on the car. The gt3 ducts extend a bit further to the front and rear, in addition to the curvier shape. I can't really say how much difference they will make, but to me it looks like there should be a little bit of an improvement for not a lot of bucks.

Thanks for the picts! I was wondering about this install for a while. Can this be done from the side by just jacking up the car and taking the front wheels off or do you need ramps/lift to get underneath the car?

Pete,
I did it on a lift, and didn't have to take the wheels off. I think it should be no problem jacking it up and pulling the wheels. For safety's sake, I suggest using a jack stand. You would have pretty good access to the straps I mentioned. They latch together on the back side of the arm. I just pried them apart with a screwdriver. The new duct fits on from the front of the arm while the straps loop around the arm and latch on the rear.

Is your avatar an A4/S4? I have a B5 S4 with a few mods...

The Avatar is my old A4 2.8 at Watkins Glen for a 2-day DE last year. Sadly that car is no more and I'm bringing a 2007 Infiniti G35 to Watkins in October. I also have a Cayman S on order but it won't get here until November.

I'm doing my best to absorb all the Cayman knowledge I can right now!

I had a A4 2.8 before I picked up the S4. Good luck with the wait for the Cayman. It seemed SO long when I was waiting for mine, but it is worth it!

Thanks for posting the info. I've got the GT3 RS ducts and I had to notch out the forward end as GT3 ducts show. You did well saving $160! Could you post the part #s?

To be fair, they aren't as large as the 996 gt3 rs ducts, but they aren't nearly as pricey either!

Do I need to get a set for the front and rear (two sets total)? Or does it just go in the front?

Thanks for those part #s. The GT3RS ducts extend forward another 8-9". On my lowered car driven on the street they proved to be too low and I tore both up and effectivly wound up removing enough material that the ducts now resemble the GT3 ducts you show. Expensive lesson! again thanks for the post.


MDKOD - The GT3 rear brake (NACA) ducts are molded into the 996/997 plastic intermediate bottom tray which is not likely fit the 987.

I believe these front ducts are now like $17, I have a set that I haven't put on yet. I think they came from Vertex. Regarding the rears, do a search over in the 996 turbo forum. Lots of info, but I believe all require custom trimming and fitting, nothing is plug and play.

I think ECS has the 996 GT3 for under $10 now.

In the rear I'm working with a guy that has a 3d printer to improve the 997 TT rear ducts. I need a worn out trailing arm so he can get exact measurements for the attachment points. Anyone have one laying around?

The other thing for the rear is to make sure you turn off PSM.
