Default 356 Outlaw

I have been looking around at 356s lately and have noted a Great difference in prices. Obviously rare cars, full restorations, non restored cars that haVe been taken great care of.

I've seen cars that need a little work that were priced between $30K - $40K. What I've been noting lately are a lot of older Porsche getting the Outlaw message on the older long hood 911s but not too many of the 356s. If I were to acquire a car that needed a good amount of work I wouldn't mind going the Outlaw route. Upping the displacement and other tweaks to gain more power and precision from the chassis

What are other people's thoughts on going outlaw on the and suspension. Of course I wouldn't do anything destructive on any numbers matching parts if present.

How much power could I get out of a post production 356 engine. Just something to drive around town and have fun on the twisties up around Malibu and Nevada City?

How much do you want to spend. WILLHOIT AUTO RESTORATION down the street can get you over 150HP.

One quick question here. How close are the 356 cars compared to the older 50s and 60s VW Bugs? I would imagine the early versions of each make would be close mechanically to each other.

I'm more interested in getting it up and purring right with the gearing and such before I touch the externals and other vanity crap. I've never been a fan of VW bugs but I have a friend I grew up with who races them so he knows his way around the Porsche air cooled designed that aught to count for something.

Mechanicals are the same - specs are different. VW adjusts valves to .009, the 356 to .006 ,etc.

So it wouldn't be a stretch at all for my friend to help me tool around on a 356? He actually does quarter mile racing in one of them and still has a Split Oval his dad traded for a Knuclehead Harley back in the early 90s. Every time we go somewhere in that split oval someone is always asking him how much he wants for it. Sorry - he says he will NEVER sell that car.

Little brother has a pre a with a polo motor. He would probably sell it at the right price but even that would be well into the six figure's.

Now that is Bitchin'! Having that 356 in the middle of a pack of modern Porsches during a track event.

I'm thinking more of acquiring a rusty one that needs a helping hand that way I won't feel to quilty about making modifications to the body if needed. Something that needs work and I can get for around $30K.

Also, I saw a 356 with a 912 engine stating that it produces more power, is that common practice and true?

We had a built 914 motor in our Outlaw.

The Emory's are putting similar motors in their 356s.
2650cc putting out 200hp.

JoAnne,

What can you tell me about the fuel system & tank that was in your 55.. love that set-up. Also, which 914 upright fan kit was that you used. I'm considering a built 914 motor for my outlaw as well.. any other details you can share about that install would be great. Beautiful car!

I like that 914 idea. Wonder if a trip to E.A.S.Y. for some brain pickin's sms ideas would help. I want to keep the car about a 3 on the Hagerty's scale while boostin' about 200bhp at the crank. Don't know what I should do with the gearing. Mostly City and back woods (Nevada City) driving comes to mind. And of course the last gear for highway cruzin.

I've got a friend with a Type IV (914) in his 914 built by FAT. It's basically 200 lb/ft torque monster with short gears. You'll play hell catching him in an Auto-X. He set FTD at Charlotte in '08. The engine is still just as lethal to this day.
150 is about all you want to stretch a 356 case unless you like rebuilding them like race cars. A wise old gentleman whose been doing this longer than anyone I know alive and still wrenching on these told me so years ago. 3 mains (yes there is another one in the 3rd piece) but I don't count it. You can beat one up but for so long if you push your luck. Find a formula that works and has longevity. You'll be money ahead.

Now, were I to do it I'd base it on a Type IV like Jake Raby or FAT. They are more robust and as you have read, the Emory's know too.
