Default Dean Jeffries Iron Cross Torsion Bar Covers

Dear Jack:

How are you? So happy to see your car continuing to progress. I had to share with you my Torsion Bar covers which are exact replicas of what was on YOUR CAR back in 1956 when Dean did the initial modifications. I understand that you do not have the originals but if you want some for your car, I can tell you where I got mine, let me know what you think. I am honored to put them on my car following in Dean's footsteps.

The Fuchs are just temporary wheels, I am going with Minilites.

Hope you enjoy and would love to get your take on my restoration.

Sincerely,
Shane

Thanks - Brett Johnson sent a set of the reproduction covers after I provided some pictures of my car from some of the magazine articles on it. The reproductions aren't exactly right but they are pretty close and they'll be on the car in the next two weeks.

I went to visit the car in "Body Shop Jail" today and am happy to report that its sentence is almost up and it will be coming home soon where I can complete the brakes, fuel system, interior and engine. I'm going to be very busy between now and next March.

Here's a picture of the car after wet sanding and buffing:

The Carrera finished its stay at Eurocraft Classics in Manchester, GA today and is now moving on to the next stage of the restoration process. The brakes and some other work needs to be attended to before we move on to the trim and interior stage. Mike Marcelic did a phenomenal job on the body work and paint - he's done quite a few award winning 356 Porsches and his experience and attention to detail really show in his work.

The Kustomrama website has just published a new article on the car here:

There's also going to be a chapter devoted to the Porsche in Tom Cotter's new book "The Corvette in the Barn" that is due out this month.

Don't know if you're still doing the engine work youself, but if not, I can strongly recommend Vernon Crotts in Tallahassee. He did a couple 904 motors for me. I think he closed his shop a couple years back and is now working with the folks at the late Gary Kempton's restoration place, http://www.gkrestorations.com/

I've been working on the Carrera installing new brakes, tie rods, Koni steering damper, dual master cylinder, and trunk insulation. I've cleaned up and reinstalled the Koni shocks, the headlights and horns and rewired the lights. I've also applied a fresh coat of Candy Apple Red to the tail light lenses. The drums are off getting polished and will be done next week. I'll be installing the Stoddard insulation kit in the interior and engine compartment next, then the headliner and new windshield will go in followed by the rest of the glass.

Worked on installing some of the interior sound deadening materials, the headliner insulation and the brake drums this weekend - ran out of 3M trim adhesive so the tunnel pieces and four big pieces for the main floor will need to be done next weekend. The Stoddard sound deadening kit is expensive but worth the money in the time and aggravation it saves. So far only minor trimming has been necessary and its turning out pretty well.

Latest shots - will post more next week after all the glass is in the car - we installed the new custom headliner last Friday and it looks really good. Working around the roof vents was every bit as much fun as we anticipated.
