I've been thinking aboout upgrading the sway bars on my 82 to the bigger Carerra bars. In the mean time I've found sway and torsion bars from an 86 torbo look. I don't know the sizes. I assume they would be bigger.

Sooo, anybody have any thoughts about this switch??

Hi:

The Carrera swaybars are larger so thats a good upgrade. Front torsion bars are the same as your SC's however, the rear Carrera bars are 1mm larger in diameter.

If you'll forgive me, I'd kindly offer that installing Carrera rear torsion bars are a total waste of good money for the VERY modest benefit weighed against the cost of installation, setup and alignment. If you truly want your SC to handle better, budget yourself for a set of torsion bars such as something in the 22/28 or 22/29 range. Now THAT makes a real improvement thats worth every dime,...

So go with Carerra sway bars and 22/ 28-29 torsion bars? Are the Turbo look tbars the same then as the standard Carerra bars? Does it make a difference that my SC is a Targa? I've got Koni adjustable shocks front and rear. I try to get to 2-4 track days a year other wise its my weekend toy. I still want my wife to enjoy the ride as well. Can I have my cake and eat it too?

Turbo-look Carrera's have 26mm rear torsion bars and 19mm front ones.

If you follow my recommendations for your Targa, I think you'll be very pleased with the results,......

Hi Steve,

As allways you are the voice of reason and knowledge. I'll be looking for the Carerra bars. If I can't find OEM bars, is there an aftermarket source for them that you recomend? If so what size should I be looking for? Same question for the torsion bars. Is there a big difference between the 28 and 29 bars?

The only aftermarket swaybars that we sell and install are the Smart Racing ones. Nothing else even comes close,....

Swaybar sizes are selected based on what & how you will use the car.

28mm or 29mm T-bars will both be OK with the nod going to 29's for DE events.

With such suspension change remember to get the car corner weighted and aligned too.

SC...: I'll add my two cents. Before you put the Carrera sway bars on have the rear mounting consoles replaced with the newer, stronger version. The bigger rear bar will break your consoles not long after you do the replacement.

WHen I bought my 80SC a few months ago my favorite wrench took me for a ride in three other SCs and Carreras with various suspension updgrades performed. My feel was that the 22/28 or 22/29 cars cornered much flatter but did not really feel that much stiffer on the roads - so you can have your cake and eat it, mostly.

Your welcome and I was quite surprised. After having been in a number of stiffened 964s and feeling how stiff they rode on the street I was shocked to see how this "inferior" torsion bar technology worked. If yu use the car a lot on the street (where your wife would car about it) then I would consider 22/28 or even 21/28. I use my car 80% for track and the 20% street is usually just me or with one of my kids so I think I will go 22/29.
