Started this thread with the 993 boys a while back, but now that I am a 996 guy, thought you all would be interested as well. Traded my ducati 999 for a custom Harley VROD. JUST AN FYI- DID YOU GUYS KNOW PORSCHE DESIGNED THE ENGINE??!! The hard core harley guys poo-poo it, but the thing is so far and away technologically advanced from the traditional HD (i have had one) it is unreal! (not to mention stock has 40 more hp than a stocker HD!!)

This purchase must be the ultimate slippery slope mod!!!!!!

Review of Harley Davidson V-Rod

Harley is famous for it's 45° V-Twin Engine. With the V-Rod, it is now sporting a 60° V-Twin. The V-Rod is the first Harley Davidson "Cruiser" that is not air cooled, marking a strong departure from an engine with a design that can be traced to the 1930's when Harley debuted it's Knucklehead engine. Harley calls this engine the Revolution®.

-Engine designed with Porsche, it can be traced back to Harley's failed attempt at breaking into racing with the VR1000 racer, also a 60° liquid cooled motor. The Revolution is both rubber mounted and counterbalanced.

Correct the vrod came out in 02. No one knows the engine was porsche designed!!! Chad996 I will let ya slide on your comment, bc you were a big help to me in responding to my first three requests for 996 info on this forum. :-)

Chad is right. I'm not into bikes , but that was all over the media when the VRod was introduced. HD played up the Porsche connection for marketing reasons. I even remember seeing a tv show about all the testing they did, some of which the German engineers didn't understand relating to the heat generated by parades, cruising, etc. (the bikes had to idle in the afternoon desert sun for an hour or so without overheating).

Good luck w Vrod. Try the shallower bars for the Euro feel (since you'll probably be running faster than HD cruisers (w your Duc history).

Not a Harley fan but I can't believe the bike is not embraced by the HD owners, it's a great dragster looking bike. Go figure???????

I went to check the V-Rod out last year, simply because of the Porsche connection. I guess I was expecting a Ducati or sport-bike configuration. Instead it's more of a cruiser configuration. As far as HD cruisers go, I think it's the best one out there. Congrats!!

I wouldn't say that porsche created the Revolution motor. They worked with HD to develope it. I guess it would be accurate to say there was a collaboration.

nice bike (partial to the Ducati though)
enjoy - porsche engineering did a good job on the rev motor from what i have heard although it will take a while for the rest of the HD community to catch up.
same thing happening over there with the Air vs. water crowds

Mundman- It would be ACCURATE to spell develop without an "e" on the end as well... ;-)
