Hi

I have the opportunity to bid to purchase a 1972 911 Coupe. It needs a lot of work, the engine and tranny are in boxes. It comes with a few spare parts such as two extra doors a rear glass and several other misc. parts. The question is how much is it worth. It has a couple of small rust spots. The battery compartment appears to not be rusted out that I could see. I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this.

Can't help you with any numbers for the US market, but the model type and transmission type will affect value as well as the condition of the car (parts). Most valuable is the S-model. They are worth quite a lot even in bad shape, as long as they're restorable/fixable. A friend paid app. US$ 20.000 here in Sweden for a 1972 2.2S with an uncomplete history and several rust spots. These cars are getting very rare now. However if it's a T-model, it's worth considerably less. A Sportomatic box also tends to lower value.

Here's a data point: In the May 2002 Excellence, the Market Update listed 1972 911 T/E/S in poor condition as $7,482/$7,876/$10,627. Excellent condition, for comparison, was $11,388/$11,988/$16,175. However, given that you have to assemble everything, engine and tranny in unknown condition, do some rust repair....maybe $2,500-$3,000K? The difficulty here is that you can easily put in more money than it's worth - which may or may not be OK for you. For example, if the inside of the engine is trash, you could be into several thousand dollars to set it right.

If I was buying it, I wouldn't spend more than $2k. I'm assuming it's a 911T. If it's and E or S, maybe a little, but not much more.
