Default Mid-Rise Scissor Lift & Engine Removal

Can the engine and trans be comfortably removed from a 911 using at Mid-Rise Scissor style lift? I'm thinking about getting something like THIS
I'm not thrilled with wide ramps, but looks like the trade off between this style that has a guide track for the moving up and down and the ones that just have small wheels that roll back and forth on the floor. I suspect they would destroy the floor coating.

I was going to install a 2 post, but I just can't make it work with only a 10' ceiling. Plus, those lifts have a very wide OD from post to post. They would take up 2 or my 3 bays.

Anyone have one or have used one? What is your experience?

That's a very cool little lift.
On older p-cars, do you think the wheelbase is long enough to clear both ends of those little ramps?

I have. I got everything unhooked and ready to come out except the tranny and engine mounts. I then set the car as far back on the lift as far as I could. I put my jack under the motor and used the lift to lift the car away from the motor. It barely cleared and the motor/tranny was really awkward to handle. I can be done but I wouldn't have let anyone near the car. No way I would have lifted it with the motor and tranny bolted in, it would have tipped for sure. It can be done but sure is not optimal.

I have one more like this one

Dave, with the ends turned down the wheels will fit between the ramps. I have about 65" and the ramps with the flaps bent is 58".

I looked at the Bend Pak fmodel like the one you pointed to, John. Looks less stable and I don't like the wheels grinding on my painted floor.

I was thinking the *** would hang out over the end of the ramps and allow access. I want to be able to put a cart under the engine/trans for stability when I do the drop, then lift car up and probably lower the cart at the same time.

Randy, are you taking your tranny out again???

I have an ATV jack for the engine/tranny if you want it.

I am. I can't get any warranty work from Jack Lewis even though it never work correctly one day. I am going to do the job myself. I am an honorable man. If I don't do the job right, I will redo it at my expense. Same way I run my company.

How does the ATV jack work? Is that what you used on your 911? How did you get the car high enough in the air to slide the engine/trans out from under it? I know you did most of the work on your G/D car.

I would say that will work fine. Worst case you remove the 2 flaps at the end of the platform. Use the support the engine/trans with a motorcycle jack and lift the car off it method. You will need to move the engine/trans assembly back a bit to get the shift rod out of the chassis.

While I like those driver-over lifts for their safety aspects and convenience, a low car gives no room to place the rubber lift blocks between the chassis and the platforms and that's a real problem.

All of these type ramps I see in use at tire & brake shops have larger rubber pads covering the lift surfaces that directly contact the chassis just for this reason.

OK
First off get one of these...
http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf...31%39%38%33%29
It will make handling the engine/trans a piece of cake.

Secondly...
Ship your trans to Gairy Fairbanks, if he is still rebuilding transmissions.
He will fix it for a fair price and it will work properly.

Thirdly...
Install and enjoy.

Just trying to save you some time, and further frustration.

Modifications to my Bendpak. Works great for R&R motors/trans.

Yep those things are great. You can't actually see it in this pic but it's under there and it balances perfectly. You can "drive" it anywhere you want by yourself.

Randy, I used the ATV jack for R&R and it looked similar to Chris' photo above.

You just need tall jack stands and a little patience and you can save your $2500. Unless you plan to do this often, I wouldn't worry about it.

The jack tool wasn't available, or at least I didn't know about it when I had my SC. I bought the ATV jack at harbor freight, but you can have it if you want it.

If you are not looking to stand under the car, but can sit to work, have you ruled out a MaxJax? 2-post, works in 10 ft ceilings, and they are easily removable when not in use to free up floor space. Got one from CostCo last winter, been very pleased with it for regular MTCE items. It is fully open for an engine trans drop, but I have not done that.

I have the same bendpac as Doc and find it very useful. However, if I had to do it over again, I would get a max jack, that works well in a low ceiling garage http://www.maxjaxusa.com/

Another thumbs up for the MaxJax. Perfect for low ceilings where you normally can't put a lift. I've had mine 3+ years and have R&R motors, trannys from various cars. I've done it with jackstands and I'm not going back. Once of the best tools I've bought.
