Road & Track Takes You on a Photo History of the 911

The 1995 993 Carrera: the last of the air-cooled 911s.

I love the Porsche 911. I’ve been hooked on the car ever since my dad brought home a gold ’79 SC Targa and presented it to my mom for her 40th birthday present. Although I can’t remember her actually driving that car, as my dad seemed to be glued to the seat.

Anyways, the point isn’t that I love the 911, or that my dad isn’t the most selfless gift giver, it’s that everyone loves the 911. And if you don’t love the 911, then you don’t love progress and human ingenuity. So you probably wouldn’t be interested in Road & Track‘s amazing photo history of the 911 anyways.

But for the rest of us, you’re going to love it. Even the most learned 911 scholars of the bunch should glean some worthwhile info, or see a new classic photo in R&T‘s 38-photo deep-dive. The photo journey documents “the changes that the 911 went through to become the car it is today.” That’s a heck of a lot of innovation.

We picked out five of the biggest changes and posted them up in the gallery below. But it’s definitely worth taking a few minutes to go along with R&T on their ride into 911 history. Cause though she may look fairly close to the car you see today, we’ve come a long way since 1963.
