Among all of the automotive awards handed out throughout the year, very few focus on what a car is like to drive for someone who likes to drive. There are overall car of the year awards. There are best reliability and best initial quality. Motor Trend has those awards, too, but they also have the coveted title of Best Driver’s Car. This year’s top three including the fantastic Carrera S.

In the 40 minute video above, very little time is devoted to the 991.2 Carrera S. Going in to it, we could all assume that the Porsche would be somewhere near the top of the list. The 911 has won the contest twice, so it’ll always be a good showing. When it comes time to talk about the car, they just put the 3rd place trophy on the car and head to the final two.

Hopping over to the Motor Trend website reveals some more information about why the car scored so well, but also why the car didn’t win. Driving the 911 is an out-of-body experience for many of the editors, and they talk at length about how the car feels like an extension of them. That, of course, is what you want from a driver’s car.

Editor Jason Cammisa enjoyed the performance quite a bit, but missed some of the passion. “The 991 still doesn’t have the thrilling, I-may-die-at-any-moment experience of older 911s,” Cammisa said.

The overall winner, the McLaren 570s, is no real surprise. I’d expect a $200,000 car to be better than a $75,000 car. But in this competition that’s not always the case, evidenced by the poor showing from the Audi R8 V10 plus.
