Volkswagen may be in hot water, but Porsche is thriving.

To say that 2016 was a good year for Porsche would be something of an understatement. According to the automaker, last year was one of the most lucrative in its entire history. The company saw its deliveries increase to 237,778, a raise by six percent, and achieved a revenue of approximately $24.11 billion, up four percent.

Those are some impressive figures, and to help celebrate the occasion, Porsche is giving 21,000 employees a bonus. And, of course, the innovative German car company is doing it in the most innovative way possible. In honor of its staff helping to make the 911 Turbo and 911 R even more popular, Porsche’s employees will receive a bonus of up to EUR 9,111 gross. Clever, huh? The bonuses are adjusted to according to various aspects, such as hours worked, but an individual payout could go as high as almost $10,000.

‘No one in our VW family received as large a bonus as our employees at Porsche.
The result was this extraordinary, one-off, but completely justified, bonus.’

“For Porsche, 2016 was an eventful, emotional and, above all, highly successful year,” says Porsche chairman Oliver Blume. “This was thanks to our employees, who enabled us to expand our attractive model range to include an array of new and exciting sports cars, such as the 911 Turbo and 911 R, the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman as well as the Panamera. The expertise and passion of our staff forms the basis of a successful future for Porsche.”

Porsche’s Works Council negotiated the bonus for the employees. And, as Group Works Council chairman Uwe Hück points out, negotiating the bonus was harder than before because of a separate company concern: Volkswagen’s ongoing troubles.

“In the end, no one in our large VW family received anywhere near as large a bonus as our employees at Porsche,” says Hück. “The result was this extraordinary and one-off, but completely justified, bonus.”
