Porsche & Bugatti – A Tale of Love and Perfection

Achim Anscheint is Bugatti’s design director, and therefore one of the most renowned automotive designers in the world, and he happens to drive  Porsche.

To be fair, Anscheint actually commutes to his Wolfsburg office via Germany’s public transport, or VW Golf GTI sometimes, but on the weekends Anscheint drives a very special Porsche. A 981 Porsche 911 SC, which has been stripped down to what he calls, “the essentials.”

A creative mastermind like him wouldn’t drive just any Porsche, or a stock Porsche at that. Anscheint has gone back to basics on his 911 and removed every unnecessary part from the car, therefore converting dashboard buttons into basic toggle switches, removing the back seat, radio, heating system and even the door panels.

For Anscheint, this 911 build has taken some time to understand what a 1981 Porsche can live with and can’t live without. “It’s all been a compromise,” he says. That’s not it thought, Anscheint’s real baby is a Bugatti Type 35 from the 1920s.  He’s spent the last 10 years restoring this master piece with the help of fellow collectors and friends, who let him know when and where to find the right or parts and buyers.

As if owning a vintage Porsche 911 and Bugatti wasn’t enough, Anscheint is the man behind the world’s most coveted, expensive, and outrageous super sports car—the Bugatti Chiron. On one hand, he describes his Porsche as the most basic and rewarding vehicle, and on the other, an incredible performer with zero compromises and a big and hefty price tag.

Obviously both companies are owned by the Volkswagen group, so much is shared between them to develop the best possible product. In the end, Anscheint is able to grasp inspiration from his old Bugatti, transmit it to his Porsche 911, and ultimately evolve it in the Chiron.
