Let’s Build Some LEGO Porsches on the Beach

There are few things as purely fun in this world as playing with a set of LEGOs. Watching these tiny bricks snap together to form creations that are immensely more than the sum of their parts brings a special kind of joy to my life. It’s a form of entertainment, but I also find it cathartic to sit down with a new set and slowly watch this mess of plastic shapes become a tangible and recognizable object. It is like creating order from a bag of chaos, and I love it.

Some of my favorite sets include the new Speed Champions series. Last year they came out with a big pile of race cars like the 918 Spyder and the 911 GT. For 2016 they have even more Porsche goodness, including this full racing kit that includes the Porsche 919 Hybrid and the classic 917K, and it comes with a pit wall as well.

I managed to get my hands on a set right before I went on vacation. What happened next was only natural for me. I spent a wonderful afternoon sitting at my beachside campsite slapping together the little bricks and watching the race cars that emerged. I took the liberty of recording the whole process and made a fun little timelapse video of the experience.

The set itself is incredibly fun to build, and Lego has done some interesting things to get the proper shapes and details of these cars. The set is broken into three sections; you build each car one at a time, then you slap together the foldable pit row kit. This makes it a lot easier to do in multiple sessions. It took me a couple of hours to get everything put together, so setting it up to be done piecemeal is a huge bonus in my book.

If you are interested in seeing how it all goes together and what it looks like, just press that play button and enjoy.
