2017 Porsche 911 Carrera Analysis

Like it or not, the lowliest Carrera on the totem pole has two turbos. The thing is, you’re not allowed to call it a “Turbo.” That naming nomenclature is still reserved for the model burdened with the most amount of forced induction. That poses an issue, as turbos have lag, and as such, it changes the driving experience. So does the new 991.2 Carrera — now equipped with a brace of turbos — lose any of the magic that we love so much?

The guys over at Motor Trend don’t seem to think so. Sure the turbos have a bit of lag, but the old naturally aspirated engine was rev-happy and it didn’t have a whole lot of grunt down low. As a result, the feeling from both the engines are quite similar. When you’re on the boil, there’s enough RPMs to spool up the turbos quickly, and since they are smaller, the lag is hardly even more than half a second.

The electric power steering has been improved as well. But as they say in the video below, it is not quite as sharp as the system you’ll find in the 997. It seems unusual that Porsche has let the 991 evolve this much, and this quickly. But in doing so, Porsche has made it faster than the outgoing Carrera S.
