If you’re in the market for the ultimate Porsche 924 survivor racer, and you have roughly a quarter million dollars to spare — or even if you just love to gawk at beautiful things you could never afford — have a gander at this 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTR.

On July 28th in the U.K., Silverstone Auctions will be offering up this survivor race car with an estimate between £475,000 – £575,000. That’s big money, to be sure, but odds are good this car will still attract big interest. So what makes this racer so potentially valuable?

First of all, this is one of only 17 924 GTRs that Porsche built to compete at Le Mans in the Group 4 (Sports Cars) class. Those cars had some success back in the day, but this particular one avoided the rigors of racing altogether, and was one of two new cars imported to Japan. While the other was used for racing, this one was purchased by a businessman and classic car collector who apparently wasn’t very into driving, because he only put 67 total miles on her at Suzuka and Fuji.

After seven years, the owner retired this 924 GTR altogether, and stored her in the attic of his garage. Once a year, he would have her brought down and serviced by Porsche specialists. And between servicing, the engine was regularly started and run, though the car wasn’t driven at all.

So basically, she’s an out-of-the-box time machine. Can you say “Survivor”?
