1968 Porsche 911L Is the Classic Street-Legal Race Car of Your Dreams

1968 Porsche 911L

As you can see below, Petrolicious makes some of the best car videos around. Probably because they find some of the best cars around to feature. And this 1968 Porsche 911L is one special car.

The one-time Trans Am racer belongs to Spike Feresten, a comedy writer/car guy who first learned the glory of Porsche after working with Jerry Seinfeld and David Letterman. Later on, he learned first hand the glory of driving a street-legal race car.

“I can relive any race from the Trans Am period from 1968-1969 on my way up to 45 miles an hour. It’s that loud through the first couple of gears. And then out on the highway, it’s just a dream,” says Feresten in the video.

Besides a heap of beautifully shot footage of the street-legal racer doing it’s thing, we also get a bit of an oral history about the raucous Trans Am racing series, which was started in 1966. This particular car was ordered for the 1968 series and was raced by Fred Baker, the progeny of the makers of Tonka Trunks.

After first being delivered to Sebring and raced just 10 hours later, a Porsche photographer snapped an iconic photo of the car, that served as a poster and the cover of the marque’s motorsports magazine. And as if the car wasn’t historical enough, Dick Smothers co-drove it in a race at Irish Hills.
